Answer: Freddie Mercury came up with the name “Queen” for the band. He was quoted saying, "Years ago I thought up the name 'Queen'… It's just a name, but it's very regal obviously, and it sounds splendid…It's a strong name, very universal and immediate. It had a lot of visual potential and was open to all sorts of interpretations. I was certainly aware of gay connotations, but that was just one face of it.“ He also designed the Queen crest, using the astrological signs of the four members: two Leos, one Cancer and one Virgo. Despite this, Freddie claimed not to believe in astrology.

Sweet wife will love it one of our favourite bands 😊

1973

Queens first album was released and loved by many as early as 1973! It was also loved by me after birth around two decades later, and Queen songs are still loved by more than two decades later still!

That would be 1973 and it was Queens Self-titled album...

1973 it was their self titled album and one of my favourites <3

1973 and I still have that album

1973 (self-titled album)

Freddie Mercury as he felt that the name sounded very Regal and better than the original name of SMILE.

Freddie Mercury changed the name from smile.. Obviously a very regal name. Universally well known.. But he says there's no meaning.. It was just a name..

Freddie Mercury - It's a strong name, very universal and immediate. It had a lot of visual potential and was open to all sorts of interpretations.

Freddy Mercury, it had many meanings including strength, regality and the obvious gay connotations of the word.

Freddie Mercury...He apparently thought it up years ago, and said of the name Queen ..."It's just a name, but it's very regal obviously, and it sounds splendid…It's a strong name, very universal and immediate."

Freddy Mercury. He thought up the name Queen. It's just a name, but it's very regal obviously, and it sounds splendid. It's a strong name, very universal and immediate. It had a lot of visual potential and was open to all sorts of interpretations.

Freddie Mercury It’s just a name, but it’s very regal obviously, and it sounds splendid … It’s a strong name, very universal and immediate. It had a lot of visual potential and was open to all sorts of interpretations. I was certainly aware of gay connotations, but that was just one face of it.

Freddie Mercury - it regal - universal, sounds splendid and of course personally I think he called it after Queen in the garden" the name of Freddie's graduate work at college.

Freddie Mercury - It's a strong name, very universal and immediate. It had a lot of visual potential and was open to all sorts of interpretations.

Freddy Mercury, it was changed from Smile. The royal association and the slightly camp edge in its majesterial quality no doubt was the clincher.

The fabulous Freddie Mercury 👏 - It's a strong name, very universal and immediate. It had a lot of visual potential and was open to all sorts of interpretations.

Freddie Mercury. I think it was because of his perfectionest nature and the real Queen is definately prim propper and perfect.

Freddie Mercury. He thought of the name a few years earlier because it is very regal and sounded splendid. Very strong , universal and immediate. He thought it had a lot of visual potential, but was open to many interpretations, one being the gay connotation of the word. Better than their original name smile I think!

Freddy Mercury, other than a regal name there is no other meaning.

Freddie Mercury though the name Queen had really strong branding potential as it was simple, people were familiar with the term and had a multitude of meanings depending on personal interpretations... This is what Freddie actually said on the matter... "I thought up the name Queen. It's just a name, but it's very regal obviously, and it sounds splendid. It's a strong name, very universal and immediate. It had a lot of visual potential and was open to all sorts of interpretations. I was certainly aware of gay connotations, but that was just one facet of it."

Freddie Mercury/Farrokh Bulsara thought up the name Queen. Saying "It's just a name, but it's very regal obviously, and it sounds splendid, It's a strong name, very universal and immediate. It had a lot of visual potential and was open to all sorts of interpretations." 🙂

Freddy Mercury. He said the name Queen sounds regal , strong and universal. Chloe Flynn

Originally called Smile, singer Freddie Mercury came up with the new name for the band, later saying:"Years ago I thought up the name 'Queen'… It's just a name, but it's very regal obviously, and it sounds splendid…It's a strong name, very universal and immediate. 🙂 Darren AC Peel

Freddie Mercury was the genius behind the new name for the band. He said not only did it sound regal but it was “strong, universal and immediate”. It was also visual and open to different types of interpretation; the gay connotation was only one small aspect of it.

Lead singer Freddie Mercury named the band after saying that to him the name Queen sounded regal, strong and universal.

Freddie Mercury - cause the name sounded regal, strong and universal

Its Freddie Mercury

Freddie Mercury because he said Queen sounded regal, strong and universal

Freddie Mercury said "Years ago I thought up the name 'Queen'… It's just a name, but it's very regal obviously, and it sounds splendid…It's a strong name, very universal and immediate. It had a lot of visual potential and was open to all sorts of interpretations. I was certainly aware of gay connotations, but that was just one face of it."

Freddie Mercury provided the majestic name prior to the first album's release. He had already conjured a multitude of onstage visual possibilities for such a regally-named band. Obviously, Mercury was aware of each facet of the word's meaning in 1970's England but the ambiguous element appealed to him.
